What in the world is a Bento Box?

March 21, 2012

I am a very visual person, especially when it comes to food. My grandfather was a chef for over 50 years, and he used to always stress to me the importance of how food was presented. “The eyes are the stool pigeon for the stomach” was one of his favorite expressions, meaning if it’s a feast for the eyes, it will more than likely be a feast for the stomach.I recently learned about Bento Boxes, which have their origin in Japan. Bento boxes are lunch boxes with reusable containers, so they reduce waste such as plastic bags. They also allow you to pick from a wider variety of foods for lunch. Portion control is easier if you follow a simple rule of thumb of 3 parts carbs,1 part protein and 2 parts fruits and vegetables. For me, I love how Bento boxes are colorful and allow for a nice presentation of each food. But the real kicker is you save a LOT of money by not eating to-go food from a restaurant. At the end of each day, I wash out all the containers and I’m ready to go for the next day.A common misconception about Bento boxes is that they are only for Japanese food. While it’s true that sushi fits inside quite nicely, I will put in sandwiches, dips, wraps or even leftovers from the night before. Since all the foods are separated and don’t spill or touch each other (the lids fit very snugly), I have so many options. If you’re looking for ways to make lunch more fun to eat and more fun to look at, take a look at a Bento box.
