While no one is certain who started National Soup Month or when it began, January has become widely regarded as a month to celebrate and explore soups of all kinds. We all love soup, especially when it’s cold outside, and what better time of the year to celebrate such a versatile food then right now when it is cold and we all want something delicious to help keep warm.

Soup (originally referred to as “sop”) was essentially the broth poured over a piece of bread in bowl. This eventually changed into “soup”, the name we all give it today. Soup was sold on the streets of ancient Greece as early as 6000 B.C. Many historians consider it as the first “fast food.”

The great thing about soup is it can be whatever you want it to be. Soup may be the most versatile thing we prepare in the kitchen.

Most people like it hot, but it can also be cold. It can be spicy or sweet; hearty or light. It is the one meal we can create with as little or as much work and ingredients as we like.

Soup is a food known throughout the world.

When we were children, soups brought us comfort when we were sick, sulking or socializing.
