The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra: Playing With Food

March 21, 2012

When we heard the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra, we instantly thought of the old-school Bobby McFerrin beats in the theme from the Cosby Show, and we loved it. We were blown away to find that this music is all being made with vegetables!  Listen to the carrot recorder in the video below, and tell us that's not the coolest thing you've ever heard. This orchestra plays hip-hop, jazz, pop, rock, and classical music on hand-made instruments, using fresh vegetables that last about a day.  In addition to the carrot recorders, they've got"cucumberphones," eggplant percussion instruments, pumpkin basses, celery and leek violins, pepper trumpets, and celery bongos. They've even made hybrid instruments constructed from tomatoes, potatoes, rutabegas, radishes, onion skins, cabbage, and a carrot-zuchini-red-pepper oboe.We haven't seen a collard greens instrument (yet), but we're keeping our ears peeled. grinCheck them out at the Vegetable Orchestra site.
