Juneteenth: Celebration of Freedom, Celebration of Food

June 18, 2012

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the freedom of slaves living in Texas.

A portmanteau, derived by combining the words “June” and “nineteenth,” Juneteenth is recognized in most states – Texas declared it a state holiday on Jan. 1, 1980.

History tells that although Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 22, 1862, with an effective date of Jan. 1, 1863, slaves in Texas didn’t get the news until Juneteenth – two and half years later when (Union) Gen. Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is celebrated in a variety of ways across the country, but the festivities are usually marked by worship services, dancing, singing and the consumption of delicious eats.

An array of food is enjoyed during Juneteenth celebrations, including barbecue, smothered chicken, collard greens and red desserts and beverages (such as red velvet cake and strawberry soda).
