Food Banks serve as storehouses of hope

October 25, 2012

Hunger lives at home. There are 17.9 million households that struggle to provide sufficient food for each person within the home, according to the 2011 Household Food Security study by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Food banks have been instrumental in helping get food to those in need around the country. Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, supplies more than 37 million Americans – including 14 million children and 3 million seniors – with food each year through its more than 200 member food banks. These food banks aid 61,000 agencies tackling hunger.

Such partnerships and networks aid collective efforts to combat hunger on all ends, which is a key reason why Glory Foods launched its “Race To Feeding America” campaign to benefit the child hunger efforts of Feeding America. More than one in five children, or 15.7 million, live in poverty, according to the latest statistics from the United States Census Bureau. It is the highest rate of poverty among children since the survey began in 2001.

Glory Foods, through its partnership with Front Row Motorsports, sponsored the No. 34 of David Ragan and the No. 38 of David Gilliland in five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events for “Race To Feeding America” and provided more than 500,000 meals via food and funds to help ensure more children get necessary sustenance.

A total donation of more than 54,600 pounds of food was given by Glory Foods to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte, N.C., Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee in Gray, Tenn., Feeding America Southwest Virginia in Abingdon, Va., and Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee in Maryville, Tenn., as a part of the “Race To Feeding America” campaign.  In addition, Glory Foods also donated $50,000 to Feeding America to aid in its ongoing work to provide food to children nationwide.

You can help Glory Foods feed children in need by donating at  the official campaign website, or by providing canned goods to food banks serving the communities in which you live.
